India Population: India surpasses China to become the world’s most populous nation with 142.86 crore people, says the United Nations.

According to UNFPA’s The State of World Population Report, 2023, India’s population has reached 1,428.6 million while China’s stands at 1,425.7 million, a difference of 2.9 million.

India surpasses China to become the world’s most populated country. According to UN figures, India has surpassed China to become the world’s most populated country, with 142.86 crore inhabitants. According to the UN world population dashboard, China has a population of 142.57 crore people.

According to the Pew Research Centre, India’s population has increased by almost one billion people since 1950, when the United Nations began collecting demographic data.

China’s population fell for the first time since 1960 last year. Beijing repealed its rigorous “one-child policy,” enforced in the 1980s due to overpopulation concerns, in 2016 and will allow couples to have three children starting in 2021.

As birth rates fall and the workforce ages, China faces a projected demographic downturn.

Global Population:

According to UN estimates, the world’s population will reach 8.045 billion by mid-2023.

The trend of rising population may also be seen in Africa. The world’s second-largest continent’s population is expected to increase from 1.4 to 3.9 billion people by 2100.

Eight countries with populations of more than ten million people, the majority of which are in Europe, have had their numbers decline during the last decade.

Japan is also seeing a drop as a result of its ageing population, shedding more than three million people between 2011 and 2021.

Meanwhile, the UN predicts that the global population will only begin to drop in the 2090s, after peaking at 10.4 billion.

Factors Influencing population growth:

Fertility Rate: According to the United Nations, future population increase is heavily reliant on the trajectory of future fertility.

According to World Population Prospects (2022), world fertility is expected to decline from 2.3 children per woman in 2021 to 2.1 in 2050.

Increasing longevity:

In recent years, major advances in life expectancy have been made. Life expectancy at birth is anticipated to increase globally from 72.8 years in 2019 to 77.2 years in 2050.

International Migration:

International migration contributes far less to population change than births or deaths. However, migration has a considerable impact on population size in particular countries and places.

Between 2010 and 2021, seventeen nations or territories will have a net inflow of more than one million migrants, while ten countries will experience a similar net exodus.
