Vaishakh Amavasya April (वैशाख अमावस्या): Amavasya, also known as new moon day or no moon day, is a particularly auspicious day for praying to our ancestors. Vaishakh Amavasya begins today and will end tomorrow (Thursday), April 20.

The 2023 solar eclipse will also occur tomorrow, although it will not be visible in India. Because there would be no sutak, all auspicious Vaishakh Amavasya activities can be accomplished during the day.

Vaishakh Amavasya April 2023: Significance
According to the Hindu scripture Garud Purana, Lord Vishnu declared that our progenitors visit Earth on this day of Amavasya. As a result, descendants should pray and feed them to placate them. On this day, people fast and perform puja to honour their ancestors. It is also thought that by fasting, one can atone for earlier transgressions. Shraddh rituals are conducted on Amavasya to appease and honour the ancestors. Kaal Sarp Dosh puja is also conducted on this day.

Take a bath to begin your day in Brahma Muhurat.
Begin fasting.
Pray to the Lord Sun.
Offer sesame seeds to both the holy river water and the Peepal tree.
Donate food and clothing to Brahmans and the poor.
Spread some bajra or seeds for the birds.
How to perform Puja on Vaishakh Amavasya?
After bathing, Shri Hari and Ishta Dev should be worshipped and prayed to. The senior members of the family should be blessed. Water in a copper jar should also be offered to the Sun. Our ancestors should be remembered after worshipping Surya Dev.

Things to keep in mind in Amavasya Ritual
Sesame seeds should be soaked in water or presented as a gift.
Tarpan and fasting for the tranquilly of ancestors’ souls should be performed.
Food goods should be given to the needy and unhappy.
On this day, milk and water should be poured into the Pipal tree’s roots.
In the evening, a four-sided Dipak filled with mustard oil should be burned in front of the Pipal tree.
