Assam: Raju Das has been appointed Secretary of the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Delhi. As per reports, he is the first Assamese to hold this post. Apart from taking many notable steps for the advancement of Sattriya culture, Raju Das of Sivasagar has worked for many years as the Deputy Secretary (Coordination) of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the advancement of classical dance and music throughout the country.

He began his career as a programme officer at Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2005 and rose to the position of Deputy Secretary (Coordinator).

Das also became the director of Assam’s Sattriya Kendra, a Sangeet Natak Akademi-run institution.

Das began his teaching career at the Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow.

Sangeet Natak Akademi (The National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama in English) is the Government of India’s national-level performing arts academy.

The academy serves as the country’s apex body for the performing arts, preserving and promoting India’s vast cultural heritage as expressed through music, dance, and drama. It also collaborates with governments and art academies in the country’s states and territories.

In 2022, the Sangeet Natak Akademi announced the 128 recipients of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (Akademi Puraskar) for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021 in recognition of their noteworthy contributions to the performing arts, including music, dance, theatre, traditional/folk/tribal music/dance/theatre, puppetry, and scholarship.

Ten notable individuals in the performing arts were also named Akademi Fellows by the General Council of the Akademi. The Akademi fellows will each receive Rs. 3 lakh in addition to a tamrapatra and angavastram, while the Akademi Puruskar winners will receive Rs. 1 lakh in cash.

Saroja Vaidyanathan, a master of Bharatnatyam, Sadanam Krishnan Kutty, a Kathakali dancer from Kerala, Darshana Jhaveri, a clarinettist for Carnatic music named A.K.C. Natarajan, Malini Rajurkar, a singer of Hindustani classical music from the Gwalior gharana, Chhannulal Mishra, a two-time Grammy.
