Assam: Former Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta has been appointed as Assam’s Chief Information Commissioner (প্ৰাক্তন DGP ভাস্কৰজ্যোতি মহন্তক মুখ্য তথ্য আয়ুক্ত হিচাপে নিযুক্তি).  Mahanta, who retired on January 31, 2023, has now taken on the new role. Following Mahanta’s retirement as DGP, the appointment was made, and IPS officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh took over as the new DGP of Assam.

Mahanta was an Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer from the 1988 batch who previously served as the Director General of Border (41RR). He was known for his outstanding service and dedication to the state police force, which was evident in his farewell speech.

Mahanta, from the state’s Sivasagar district, has received the President’s Gold Medal, the Chief of the Army Staff Gold Medal, the Chief Minister’s Medal for Outstanding Service in 2008, and other gallantry awards.

During his farewell parade, Mahanta thanked every police officer who took part in the procession and thanked the Assam police force. He went on to say that for every police officer, this is a service, not a job, and that he would always salute the Assam Police. Furthermore, he urged everyone to rally behind the newly appointed DGP, Gyanendra Pratap Singh.

This appointment of Mahanta as the Chief Information Commissioner is seen as an important change, given his massive knowledge of public service. Mahanta’s appointment is expected to improve the state’s information commission’s operations and increase transparency in government dealings.

After Mahanta’s tenure ended in January, GP Singh was appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam. Mahanta’s retirement marked the end of a distinguished public service career, and his new position is seen as a continuation of his contributions to the state.
