Assam: On March 27, a massive thunderstorm hit Assam’s Dibrugarh district, causing massive property damage. The thunderstorm disrupted daily life in the area and caused extensive damage to homes and other property. Many large trees and power lines were uprooted in various locations.
According to sources, an electric post uprooted and collapsed in front of the Assam Medical College and Hospital as a result of the storm (AMCH). As a result, the vehicle sustained significant damage. Furthermore, most of the district is still without power as a result of the thunderstorm.

The storm reminded of a hailstorm that hit the same district just a few months ago in December 2022. During that time, the entire Dibrugarh district was blanketed in ice as the winter chill doubled after a hailstorm white-washed Upper Assam’s greenery.

On the 26th of December, pictures and videos of hailstorms went viral on social media, with roads in several parts of Dibrugarh completely covered in white. Moran was particularly affected by the severe chills and the unexpected hailstorm.
In Tingkhang, 202 structures from 21 villages had been severely damaged, as had five houses from two villages in Lekai. A massive hailstorm hit several parts of the Dibrugarh district, affecting over 500 houses in villages. Moran, Tingkhang, Lahowal, Lekai, Naharkatia, and other areas were hit by hail.
Meanwhile, the district administration has assured affected residents that they will receive all possible assistance and support. Relief and rescue operations are currently underway, and authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid going outside until the situation stabilises.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, among other northeastern states. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind are expected in these areas in the coming days, according to the forecast.
Heavy rain is expected in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya in particular. The IMD has also issued a thunderstorm warning for isolated locations in Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, with lightning and gusty wind (40-50 kmph).
