With a few exceptions, the blue tick mark appears next to the names of Twitter users who pay a $8 monthly cost for Twitter Blue subscription. Musk has said that he will personally pay for some celebrities’ Twitter Blue subscriptions in order for them to keep their blue checks.
Elon Musk is paying for Canadian actor William Shatner’s, NBA star LeBron James’, and author Stephen King’s Twitter Blue subscriptions – all of whom notoriously disagreed with the Tesla entrepreneur over his intentions to charge for verification.

The blue tick mark system was first implemented on Twitter in 2009 to assist users in determining whether celebrities, politicians, firms and brands, news organisations, and other accounts “of public interest” were authentic and not imposters or parody accounts. Previously, the company did not charge for verification.
