National Games 2022: Assam’s Swimmer Astha Choudhury Sets New Record

National Games: Assam won two more medals today at the 36th National Games in Gujarat. One of the two medals is gold, which was won by promising swimmer Astha Choudhury. Bikram Changmai collected the other medal, which came in swimming.

On Friday, World Championships medalist Shiva Thapa outclassed Gujarati opponent Aniket J Pandey to advance to the quarterfinals of the 36th National Games at the Mahatma Mandir in Ahmedabad. Manju Basumatary of Assam also advanced to the last eight after a thrilling 3-2 win over Gujarat’s Hetal Sundarji Dama in the women’s flyweight 52kg opener.

Earlier, sprinter Amlan Borgohain won gold in the 100m, cyclist Chayanika Gogoi won silver in the 10km category, lawn bowler Nayanmoni Saikia won bronze, and Popi Hazarika won silver in the 59 kg weightlifting.

 

Meanwhile, Astha broke Rich Sarma’s record in the heats today, clocking 1:03.90 and qualifying for the final. In the evening, she clocked 1.03.38 in the 100m Butterfly, breaking her own record and winning the gold medal. Bikram won silver in the Men’s 100m Butter Fly with a time of 55.73 seconds. Meanwhile, Hima Das qualified for the final of the women’s 200m race today with a time of 23.98 seconds. Amlan Borgohain qualified for the 200m semifinals as well. He finished in 21.20 seconds. Both athletes will be back on the track on October 4 to compete in those events.

Bindyarani Devi of Manipur wins the women’s 59kg gold with a total lift of 194 kg. Popy Hazarika of Assam and Davinder Kaur of Punjab, who took home silver and bronze, respectively, were her fiercest rivals.

Popy Hazarika, a weightlifter, won a silver medal in the women’s 59-kilogram division at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent.

Meanwhile , Assam’s Nayanmoni Saikia is a part of history now after winning the first-ever gold for India in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games won bronze in the National Games 2022.
