In a noteworthy step towards improving safety and studying seismic activities in the area, Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju unveiled the Permanent Seismological Observatory in Bomdila, West Kameng district, on Sunday. The event was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Science & Technology Minister Honchun Ngandam and various other dignitaries.
Officials stated that the establishment of this observatory at Government College, Bomdila, is highly significant for Arunachal Pradesh. The region, located in seismic zone V, is renowned for its susceptibility to earthquakes.
Established in partnership with the National Centre for Seismology under the Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India, the observatory seeks to gain a comprehensive understanding of the seismic activity in the region, exploring both surface and subsurface aspects.
In his address to the audience, Rijiju underscored the vital function of the Department of Earth Sciences and pointed out the prospective advantages of the Observatory in detecting earthquakes, facilitating proactive measures to reduce casualties.
Rijiju additionally disclosed the government’s intentions for advancing technology in the area, which involve implementing a Doppler Radar System in West Kameng district. The objective is to offer accurate predictions of rainfall, temperature, humidity, and other factors, assisting farmers in strategic cultivation planning with reliable weather information.
The Union Minister also unveiled an outdoor fitness facility at Shanti Deva Vidyalaya in Bomdila and engaged in conversations with the students.
