The Assam government inaugurated the General Advisory Committee(GAC) meeting for Cultural mapping of state’s ethnic art and culture at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati, on December 11. The main objective of the meeting is to document the rich kaleidoscope of cultural traditions and heritage of each ethnic community in the state.
The Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, is spearheading the project. The government underscores the significance of meticulous attention to detail and economic considerations in the data collection process for cultural mapping.
Additionally, it recognizes the invaluable contributions of committee officials and incorporates their valuable suggestions in developing a comprehensive district-wise cultural map.
State Cabinet Minister Bimal Borah presided over the meeting, which saw the presence of distinguished figures in the state’s cultural realm. The authorities decided to undertake a cultural mapping initiative for each indigenous tribe and community, given that Assam houses over 200 distinct ethnic tribes and communities.
This endeavour aims to provide a thorough and organized documentation of the abundant cultural traditions, heritage, and history inherent in each diverse ethnic group within Assam.
