Meghalaya Election 2023: An election official who was part of a polling party died today after their vehicle was involved in an accident in West Garo Hills.

The officials were on their way to Photamati when the vehicle overturned on the road, causing serious facial and head injuries to the occupants.

According to information, the injured Polling Party officials were on their way to 44/8 Jangrapara LP School in the 44-Raksamgre Assembly Constituency when the accident occurred.

“The injured officials were immediately transported to the nearest hospital, Tikrikilla CHC, from which they were referred to a higher medical facility in Goalpara. Everyone else received first aid treatment. Medical assistance is being provided to all the injured persons, “According to a statement from the district election office.

 

According to Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor, 3,419 polling teams have been deployed for the elections to the 59 assembly seats.

“A total of 974 teams left for their polling booths on Saturday, and 893 polling teams reported reaching their destinations by 9.30 p.m., braving unfriendly terrains and water bodies,” he said.

To reach their destinations, polling teams are trekking steep mountain paths, crossing muddy rivers, and traversing difficult terrains – in some cases via ropeways, he said.

“Polling materials and EVM/VVPAT were secured by the concerned Sector Magistrate in the presence of CAPF and were taken to the concerned Polling Station which is being guarded by Central forces to ensure transparency of the entire electoral process,” it said.

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor condoled the official’s death and offered his family Rs 15 lakh in compensation.
