Meghalaya BJP president Earnest Mawrie lost the West Shillong seat to United Democratic Party candidate Paul Lyngdoh as voting for the Meghalaya Assembly Elections began on Thursday.

In Meghalaya, the BJP not only contested all 60 seats for the first time (one seat was postponed due to a candidate’s death), but it also ran a determined campaign with its bigwigs to expand its footprints in the state. The BJP was a state government partner before splitting with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). However, chief minister Conrad Sangma has hinted that the two parties could work together again if the verdict results in a hung assembly, as it did last time.
