Nagaland Election 2023: Nagaland has elected two female candidates, marking a significant milestone 60 years after the state’s inception. Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Hekani Jakhalu, both from the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, made history by becoming the state assembly election’s first female candidates. Kruse was elected from Western Angami AC, and Jakhalu was elected from Dimapur-III.
Hekani Jakhalu of the NDPP defeated Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Azheto Zhimomi by 1,536 votes in the Dimapur III seat. Salhoutuonuo Kruse, another NDPP woman candidate, defeated her Independent opponent in the Western Angami constituency by just seven votes. Both will be Nagaland’s first female legislators.

Meet Hekani Jakhalu, the first woman MLA elected to the Nagaland assembly
Hekani Jakhalu, who was elected to the Dimapur-III seat in the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections, is the state’s first female legislator. Jakhalu of the NDPP defeated Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes.
Jakhalu, 48, is a social entrepreneur and lawyer. She earned her master’s degree in law from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2013. For the past two decades, she has led a non-governmental organisation called YouthNet Nagaland.
Her NGO has been named the most popular project because it assists thousands of young people who want to study. It also provides good business opportunities for the state’s youth. On International Women’s Day 2018, she received the Nari Shakti Puraskar award from the President of India for her contributions to the state’s youth.

Salhoutuonuo Kruse won the Western Angami 8 constituency by a mere seven votes. Keneizhakho Nakhro, who ran as an Independent candidate, was defeated.
