Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” was sworn in as Nepal’s Prime Minister for the third time on Monday, a day after President Bidya Devi Bhandari appointed him.
HOURS AFTER leaving a pre-election five-party alliance led by Nepali Congress president and outgoing Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ joined forces with rival K P Sharma Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), and other smaller parties to be named Nepal’s new Prime Minister on Sunday.
After submitting a letter to the president indicating the support of 169 members of the 275-member House of Representatives, the 68-year-old former guerrilla leader was appointed as the country’s new prime minister.

Prachanda was born on December 11, 1954, in Dhikurpokhari, Kaski district, near Pokhara, and remained underground for nearly 13 years. He entered mainstream politics after the CPN-Maoist transitioned to peaceful politics, bringing an end to a decade-long armed insurgency.
From 1996 to 2006, he led the decade-long armed conflict that culminated in the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in November 2006.
