This is Nepal’s third presidential election since it became a republic in 2008.
Following a schism over backing Paudel for the presidential election, former Prime Minister KP Sharma’s CPN-UML, Nepal’s second largest party in Parliament, withdrew its support for Prime Minister “Prachanda’s” government.
Paudel’s victory in the presidential election is almost certain, thanks to the support of eight political parties.
The current president, Bidya Devi Bhandari, will leave office on March 12.
Furthermore, according to Nepal’s Election Commission, 313 members of the federal parliament voted, while 518 members of the province assemblies also voted to select the next president.
The voting took place at Nepal’s Parliament building in Kathmandu’s New Baneshwar. The Himalayan nation’s Election Commission had set up two separate polling stations at the Hall for federal parliamentarians and Province Assembly members.
