Assam fondly remembers the renowned musical icon Jayanta Hazarika ‘Rana da’ on his birth anniversary. Rana da was born on September 20, 1943. He was the younger brother of legendary Indian musician Bhupen Hazarika. Jayanta Hazarika began his career by working alongside Bhupen Hazarika. His mellifluous songs and incorporation of Western notes into indigenous Assamese tunes established him as the prototypical Assamese musician.
In his short life of 34 years, he has created many songs which are still popular. His songs were mostly composed for youngsters. Jayant Hazarika, who emerged in the world of Assamese music in the 1960s, remained active till the time of his death. Jayanta Hazarika composed many Assamese songs incorporating many features considered unconventional at that time.
Meanwhile, his music is a fusion of Assamese folk music, Hindustani classical music, western rock and roll, jazz, and western classical music. The characteristic of his melodious music is popular even today.

He started his playback singing career in 1963 with Maniram Dewan (an Assamese feature film). He also sang for films like Lotighoti, Faguni, Chikmik Bijulee, etc. On the other hand, his popular songs include Tomar morome mor, Dekha nai, Surat magan bhayal rati, Bhorir taluwar pora jodi, Ei akash bor bishal, etc. Moreover, he also composed music for many documentaries like Flora and Fauna of North East India, Wheels and the Horizon, Sanman, and Jyoti Chitraban.

Most importantly, Jayanta was instrumental in the formation of the Sur Bahini, a mobile musical group dedicated to working altruistically for the welfare of the poor.
He left behind his wife, veteran musician-singer Manisha Hazarika (who later completed many of his unfinished compositions), and a talented son, Mayukh Hazarika, after his untimely death on October 15, 1977.
