On Thursday, December 21, at approximately 11 am, the microblogging site #X, previously recognized as #Twitter, encountered a substantial technical snag.
Users, both on the website and the mobile application, were confronted with an unexpected message, ‘Welcome to your timeline’, instead of the usual display of tweets in their feed. This abnormality signaled a massive outage, rendering the platform entirely inaccessible for users during this period.
Following the resolution of the glitch reported around 11 am, both the website and mobile app were restored, and the predominant trend on X is now #TwitterDown. Users flooded the microblogging site with amusing memes, humorously addressing the app’s technical malfunction.

Downdetector, a service monitoring online outages, recorded an overwhelming influx of user reports, surpassing 70,000 complaints regarding the inability to use the platform. As of now, there is a dearth of information regarding the root cause of this widespread issue, leaving users and observers in the dark about the nature of the technical glitch.
This incident isn’t an isolated occurrence, as #X, under the ownership of Elon Musk, has grappled with downtime challenges earlier this year. Notably, both March and July witnessed instances where the platform faced disruptions.
In July alone, Downdetector reported a staggering 13,000-plus occurrences of X being inaccessible in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Users affected during this period reported encountering a message that read, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments, then try again”. The recurrence of such disruptions raises concerns about the platform’s stability and prompts a need for a comprehensive understanding of the underlying technical issues.
