New Year, the time of joy and celebration, takes a tragic turn. On Wednesday, a horrifying accident occurred on the national highway near Balijan, close to Dergaon in Golaghat district, Assam.
A collision between a bus, carrying 45 people, and a truck in Dergaon, on Wednesday at 5 am resulted in the death of at least 12 individuals so far, with 27 others sustaining serious injuries, including children among the casualties.
The drivers of the two vehicles were instantly dead. Critically injured patients were referred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), while the injured were rushed to Dergaon Civil Hospital. Many others have also been injured in this incident.
The names and ages of the deceased in the Dergaon accident are as follows: Anima Saikia (60), Shubhangkar Saikia(13), Niharika Saikia (10), Dipali Saikia (37), Nabajeet Saikia (40), Pinki Saikia (48), Rinki Bora (18), Bus driver Mridul Bora (30), Nityananda Bora (Nitul) (48), Principriya Bora (7), Humeshwar Bora (43) and truck driver Nur Alam Haque
According to the police, the collision occurred as the bus, carrying 45 passengers heading towards Tilinga Mandir in Tinsukia, collided with a truck in Dergaon heading from Tinsukia. The authorities explained that the picnic group commenced their journey at approximately 3 am, and as they approached their destination, a truck loaded with coal from Margherita collided head-on with the bus.
The accident occurred due to dense fog, as reported. It is revealed that the collision took place when the truck, traveling from Margherita towards Tinsukia’s Tilinga Mandir, confronted the bus heading towards Tinsukia. The incident was indeed alarming, causing severe damage to a portion of the passenger bus in this foggy weather.
Locals alleged that the accident took place due to the slow pace of construction work on the national highway. Accidents have been reported on the national highway on several occasions.
