Bail has been granted to former Principal Controller Nanda Babu Singh in the ongoing Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) scandal. The court deliberated over the issue for a long time before making their decision.
Singh has been on trial for the past few months, and during that time he was being investigated for suspected malpractices committed during his term.
According to sources, a special court on January 2 granted bail to Nanda Babu Singh, the former principal controller of the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) examinations and an essential member in the infamous recruitment scam.
Nanda Babu Singh, who is considered to be close to the former APSC chairman Rakesh Paul, was accused of planning and directing the burning of around 45,000 APSC preliminary and main test answer papers.
When it became known that Singh had allegedly used unethical methods in order to push his daughter Minerva Devi Arambam’s selection to the office of ACS, the story took on a new dimension. Minerva, who is the Additional District Commissioner for the Karimganj district at the moment, was called in for interrogation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in December.
On December 11, the former principal controller was arrested in relation to the APSC cash-for-job scams at his Silchar residence. After being questioned for two days consecutively, he was taken into jail by the Assam Police SIT and given three days of police custody on December 13. Singh was brought before the court when his police custody ended, and as the SIT had not asked for an extension of detention, Singh was then transferred to judicial custody on December 15.
