Dibrugarh University Ragging: Four Dibrugarh University students in Assam have been suspended for three years for allegedly ragging a junior who underwent spinal cord surgery on Thursday.

The first-year M. Com student who jumped from the second floor of his hostel last week to avoid being dragged by his seniors suffered hand and spine fractures.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu tweeted, “Surgery of Sri Anand Sarma, the Dibrugarh ragging victim, has been completed successfully.”

The minister thanked the doctor and the private hospital where the procedure was performed and stated on the microblogging site that the patient is now doing well.

The university expelled 18 students from the institute on Monday, citing ragging allegations.

Bitul Chetia, Additional Superintendent of Police in Dibrugarh, told PTI “So far, five students involved in the ragging incident have been arrested. Another person has been arrested for sheltering the accused. Our search for the others is underway.”

In a statement, Dibrugarh University said that its Anti-Ragging Committee rusticated four students for three years in an emergency meeting on Wednesday evening, during which they are barred from enrolling in any institution.
