Gamosa received a Geographical Indication (GI) label, which is an accomplishment for the state of Assam. Sarbananda Sonowal,  minister for the Union, acknowledged this on Tuesday.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote ‘A day of pride for Assam, as our #Gamosa gets a Geographical Indication Tag by the Government of India.

Grateful to Hon PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for always giving a place of prestige to this integral symbol of Assamese glory.

Congratulations Assam.”

It should be noted that gamosa, a textile made by Assamese people, is a traditional symbol that members of the state give to others as a sign of respect.

A geographical indication (GI) is a label or symbol applied to items that designates a particular geographic area or country of origin.

The Gamosa, one of the distinctive characteristics of Assamese civilization, was described as a handloom product in the Geographical Indication Registry journal of October 24. “Gamosa is a traditional Assamese textile. It is very important to the Assamese people. One of the distinctive characteristics of Assamese culture is gamosa. It represents Assamese culture. In Assamese culture, this handloom item is highly valued and widely used.

Earlier, “Gamosa” was also referred to as “Phali.” Additionally, because it was used to wipe faces, it was also called as “Mukhosa,” according to the journal.

The Golaghat district’s Institute of Handicraft Development submitted the GI tag application on October 16, 2017. According to subsection (1) of Section 13 of the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, the application was approved.
