In fact, encroachers have taken over more than 60% of the beel’s habitat.
The Silsako Beel Project is the largest, with a natural setting and an emerging urban edge. It is ecologically significant because it supports various food chains and food webs, recharges ground water, and is home to significant biodiversity with ecological and economic value. GMDA intends to use its natural setting to address the City’s storm water management system.

The government declared the lake a protected waterbody in 2008, prohibiting any construction or settlement in the surrounding 1,800 bighas.
This means that within the protected area, no activities that could potentially harm or damage the lake or its surrounding ecosystem, such as building structures or establishing human settlements, are permitted.
However, as the drive continued, the evicted families claimed that they had received no prior notice.

Following the administration’s eviction of several families living near Silsako Beel, residents have accused the government of evicting them inhumanely and without prior notice.
According to sources, approximately 200-250 families were evicted during the drive.
