A significant break has emerged within the stronghold of the All Assam Student Union (AASU) as over 300 former leaders and activists of the student union aligned themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Prior to the joining program, a large motorcycle rally, spearheaded by former AASU leader Dibyajyoti Medhi, initiated from Khanapara to Vajpayee Bhawan, where the workers subsequently joined the BJP.

The change in leadership comes after the union made a decision during its 17th general conference in Duliajan town on November 22, imposing an age limit of 40 years for AASU members.

As per the amendments, any member or leader surpassing the age of 40 is required to retire from the organisation. This initiative is in line with continuous endeavours to revitalise and revive the esteemed student organisation.

In recent years, an ongoing discussion and controversy have revolved around the maximum age for a central executive member and other office-bearers of AASU.

Since its establishment, AASU has played a significant role, notably leading the historic anti-foreigner agitation that resulted in the Assam Accord of 1985. During that period, leaders such as Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Bhrigu Kumar Phukan founded the Asom Gana Parishad, ultimately replacing the Congress in leadership.

Today, there are expectations that Kamal Kumar Medhi, a former leader of Raijor Dal, will join the BJP. Kamal Kumar has previously been associated with AAP, Congress, and Raijor Dal.

In the joining event at Vajpayee Bhawan, BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, along with Minister Pijush Hazarika, participated in the event. Arkashish Chaliha, the son of former Congress MP Kirip Chaliha, is also anticipated to join the BJP during today’s joining program.
