Every year on November 11th, National Education Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. From 1947 to 1958, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first Minister of Education in independent India, serving in Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
The day is observed to commemorate Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s contributions to education during his tenure as Education Minister. In 1920, he was elected to the foundation committee for Jamia Millia Islamia in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. In 1934, he also assisted in the relocation of the university’s campus from Aligarh to New Delhi. The main gate on campus is now named after him.

Azad laid the groundwork for India’s education system, and November 11 was designated as National Education Day.
Azad was a reformer and freedom fighter who dedicated his life to building a better nation through education. From August 15, 1947, to February 2, 1958, he was Minister of Education, during which time the UGC, AICTE, Kharagpur Institute of Higher Education, the Secondary Education Commission, and the University Education Commission were established. Azad was also instrumental in the establishment of other important educational institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Kharagpur.
He rose to prominence as a journalist publishing works critical of the British & espousing the causes of Indian nationalism. National Education Day 2022: Theme
This day is observed to recognize and honor Maulana Azad’s contributions to the education system of the country. “Changing Course, Transforming Education” is the theme for National Education Day 2022.
National Education Day is observed to promote and improve the quality of education for students throughout the country. The day also honors Azad’s contribution to establishing an independent Indian education system. Azad was also a strong supporter of universal primary education, girls’ education, free compulsory education for all children under 14, vocational training, and technical education.
