The announcement was made by the Assam government to launch ‘Gunotsav 2024,’ a statewide assessment programme intended to evaluate the academic performance of about 40 lakh students.

The programme, which is scheduled to run from January 3 to February 8, would affect an enormous 39,63,542 students by covering 43,498 government schools spread over 35 districts in the state.

During a press conference, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu revealed the specifics of this year’s evaluation procedure.

Twelve districts will compete in the first round from January 3 to 6, followed by thirteen districts from January 9 to 12, and the final ten districts in the last part from February 5 to 8. The exercise will be carried out in three phases.

Pegu emphasised that the program’s ultimate goal is to guarantee grade-specific results by identifying and filling up each child’s learning deficiency.

“This comprehensive assessment will not only evaluate scholastic and co-scholastic aspects but also focus on the availability and utilisation of infrastructure and community participation in schools,” said Pegu.

He went on to say that the exercise will be essential in identifying areas in need of development and help to improve the state’s whole educational system.

Throughout Assam, a total of 18,098 external assessors will be assigned, comprising well-known individuals like the Chief Minister, MLAs, Chief Secretary, and college instructors. These assessors will go to schools to carry out evaluations and add to the quality of the procedure.

Since its commencement in 2017, Gunotsav has been successfully implemented four times, covering all of Assam’s districts.
