Two persons were killed and dozens, including locals and army personnel, were missing after a massive landslide occurred at a railway construction site in Manipur’s Noney district, officials said on Thursday.

According to the sources, the death toll may rise significantly. At least 6-7 NF Railway staff are also feared to be trapped under the debris.

The incident took place around Wednesday midnight at the company location of the 107 territorial armies deployed near Tupul Railway Station for the protection of the under-construction railway line from Jiribam to Imphal. The entire camp was buried under the debris.

The identity of the deceased person whose body was recovered on Thursday morning is yet to be identified, a police official said.

Full-scale rescue operations are in progress by Indian Army and Assam Rifles and the available engineer plant equipment on site has been pressed into service for rescue efforts.

In the wake of the situation, Deputy Commissioner of Noney has urged the general public to take all precautions not to venture near the river area.

The District administration noted that any breach upstream will wreak havoc on the low-lying areas of Noney district headquarter.
