Ganga and Brahmaputra to be united by 4000 km long river cruise

Ganga and Brahmaputra will be connected by the country’s longest river cruise service which will begin in early 2023. Covering more than 4000 km the route will unite  Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Bogibeel in Assam.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Monday (19 September) that it will be done via Indo- Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBRP), the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) stated. The contract was awarded to Coastal Consolidated Structures Pvt Ltd on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) .

 

Sonowal further said that it is a golden opportunity to use inland waterways for promoting trade, tourism, and for cargo transportation.

The union minister laid the foundation for the construction of floating jetties at Bogibeel and Guijan, as well as inaugurating the Bogibeel Riverfront Passenger Jetty built by the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) as part of development initiatives near the bridge.

 

On the occasion, Sonowal mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of utilizing the potential of inland waterways for economic and ecologically sound logistics is being realized through the Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

 

Rameswar Teli, Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Labour, and Anshul Gupta, General Manager of NF Railways, also attended the event.
