Padma Shri Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi Chosen for Anandaram Dhekial Phukan Award-2022

Padma Shri Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi has been chosen to receive the Anandaram Dhekial Phukan Award in 2022. Anandaram Dhekial Phookan College in Nagaon will bestow the award. Ranoj Pegu, Assam’s Education Minister, will present this award to noted author Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi.

Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi will receive the award for promoting peace and harmony between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, according to the college’s principal, Joy Kumar Singha. This prestigious award will be presented to Sahitya Akademi Award winner Thongchi on the occasion of the 63rd Foundation Day of A.D.P. College on September 24th.

In addition to Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, noted writer Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora, ex-president of Assam Sahitya Sabha, and MLA of Nagaon Rupak Sharma have been invited as chief guests.

Anandaram Dhekial Phookan College has been hosting the ‘Anandaram Dhekial Phukon Memorial Lecture’ since 2001. Till now many prominent personalities such as Dr. Hiren Gohain, Bhaben Borua, Dr. Rajen Saikia, Ranjit Kumar Dev Goswami have graced the event with their esteemed lectures.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Anandaram Dhekial Phukon’s birthday, on September 22nd, a lecture titled ‘Anandaram Dhekial Phukon and a Dream of Modern Assam’ will be held in the university auditorium. Prof. Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Education Advisor of the Assam Government will participate in the lecture.

Moreover, it should be noted that the foundation day of the university was on the 7th of September, although due to the 2nd and 4th-semester examinations being held under Gauhati University at that time;so the program had to be delayed.

On September 25, the university administration announced the planning of various programmes for the university’s founding day, the distribution of awards, and various programmes for newcomers.

Who is Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi ?

Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi was born in 13th June, 1952, to late Tashi Phuntsu Thongschi and late Rinchin Chojom Thongsi at village Jigaon of present-day West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Being a prolific writer from the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh,Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi started his literary career with an Assamese poem called Jonbai which was published in 1967.

In the year 2021, Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi has been conferred with Padma Shri in the field of Literature and Education. He was formerly deputy commissioner and also known for being the second longest serving Deputy Commissioner in the country.

The 66-year-old has also been honored with several awards including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2005 for his Assamese novel Mauna Outh Mukhar Hriday.  The Founder and President of Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society, Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi can speak and write in Assamese fluently, although his mother tongue is a dialect called Sherdukpen.

On the other hand,  Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi was conferred the Degree of D. Litt. , Honoris causa by Dibrugarh University during XIX convocation held in 2021 for his valuable contribution as a litterateur, Critic, Academician, and Social Reformer.
