Almost ten years later, a minor rape victim received justice as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ramdulare Gond from Uttar Pradesh was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday.
As per reports, Gond faced charges of sexually assaulting a minor in November 2014 when she visited a field in Myorpur village (he was not an MLA at the time of the incident).
Initially, the case was tried in a POCSO court, but it was later transferred to the MP-MLA court when the accused assumed the position of a legislator.
On December 13, the MP-MLA court, presided over by Additional District Judge (I) Ahsanullah Khan, convicted Gond under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (causing disappearance of evidence and providing false information) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the POCSO Act. Subsequently, on Friday, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, including 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.
The court additionally imposed a fine of Rs. 10 lakh on the MLA, intended for the victim as compensation and rehabilitation.
In November 2014, Gond faced charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl when she visited a field in Myorpur village for personal needs. Not being an MLA at the time, his wife held the position of gram pradhan. The case initially began in a POCSO court but was later moved to the MP-MLA court following Gond’s election as a legislator.
Prior to the verdict, Gond’s attorney appealed to the court for a moderate punishment and guaranteed that Gond would responsibly support the family of the rape survivor.
