Mahashivratri 2023 fasting rules: Dos and don’ts to keep in mind while worshipping Lord Shiva

1. The sankalp for Mahashivratri fasting is taken the day before the vrat, after taking a bath and performing Shiv Puja. The sankalp is performed by placing rice and water in the palm.

2. Wake up early in the morning on the day of the fast around Brahma Muhurta or sunrise.

3. On the day of the fast, take a bath and dress in clean, preferably white, clothes.

4. People who are fasting are advised to chant ‘Om Namah Shivay’ several times a day.

5. Because Shivratri Puja is performed at night, devotees should take a second bath before performing Shiv Puja. After taking a bath, devotees usually break their fast the next day.
