In the midst of the ongoing, contentious conflict between Congressman Rahul Gandhi and the BJP, the former claimed on Tuesday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah “prevented” him from participating in interactive sessions with students at a private university in Meghalaya during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Rahul Gandhi claims that the Chief Minister of Assam’s office conveyed the instructions to the university administration on behalf of the Union Minister.

“I wanted to come to your university and address you, listen to you. But what happened is that the Home minister of India called up the Chief Minister of Assam and the CMO called up the leadership of the university and said that Rahul Gandhi must not be allowed to speak to the students”,Gandhi spoke while standing on his Yatra bus at the Assam-Meghalaya border, addressing students and others.

Tuesday morning at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in the bordering district of Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, Rahul Gandhi had scheduled separate talks with students, representatives of civil society and the party.

The Congress had originally planned to hold activities at the private university on Monday afternoon, but they had to be relocated to a hotel in the Ri Bhoi region after the university withdrew its consent.

Further he added, “It is not important if Rahul Gandhi comes or not. What is important is that you are allowed to listen to anybody you want. You must be allowed to live the life as you want and not as somebody else wants”.

“They want to turn you into slaves but I know that nobody, no power in the universe can do it”, Gandhi asserted, while attacking the BJP.

He went on to express that these kinds of things weren’t just happening in Assam but were happening in colleges, institutions, and schools all around India, stressing that kids weren’t being allowed to express their own vision and originality.

Taking to the micro-blogging site X, Congress handle posted, “the Home Minister of India called the Chief Minister of Assam and said – Do not allow Rahul Gandhi to meet the university students”. Assam CM reposted the post with a reply.
