Happy Lohri 2023:Interesting facts you must know about Lohri

The word Lohri is an abbreviation of ‘L for Lakdi or wood’, ‘Oh for Sukha Upla’, and ‘Ri for Rewari’. Lohri is essentially a harvest festival marked by the lighting of fires and the offering of Rewari, as well as the singing of folklore and the walking around the holy fire. This is one of the most important harvest festivals because it marks the sun’s journey into the Northern Hemisphere; it is also thought to mark the end of the cold winter season.

One of the popular reasons for the name Lohri is that it is believed that Lohita is Holika’s sister, from which the name Lohri is derived.

The legend of Dulla Bhatti is the central theme of Lohri’s songs. During Akbar’s reign, Dulla Bhatti lived in the Punjab state. He was regarded as a Punjabi hero. He rescued deprived Punjabi girls who were being forcibly taken from the Sandal Bar region to be sold in the Middle Eastern slave market.

Lohri sweets are said to be made with jaggery because it adds sweetness to the festival and also brings good luck.

Wheat is the major winter crop in Punjab, India’s breadbasket, and is planted in the month of October and harvested in the month of March or April. During the month of January, the fields turn up with the promise of a golden harvest, and farmers celebrate the Lohri festival before cutting and gathering the crops.
