Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti 2023: The birth anniversary of Maratha king Shivaji is celebrated as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti or Shivaji Jayanti. Every year on February 19, Shivaji Jayanti is observed in honour of the founder of the Maratha Kingdom. Shivaji Maharaj was born in the Shivneri fort in Pune on March 21, 1690. This year marks the 393rd birth anniversary of the mighty Maratha.

Shivaji Jayanti is primarily a Maharashtrian festival that is observed as a public holiday. On this day, the state observes a public holiday. The day is usually celebrated with great zeal and pride. People also organise cultural events.

 

CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ JAYANTI 2023: HISTORY

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule established Shivaji Jayanti, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, in 1870. Raigad, about 100 kilometres from Pune, is where Mahatma Jyotirao Phule discovered Shivaji Maharaj’s tomb. Pune was the first city to observe Shivaji Jayanti.

Shivaji Jayanti was championed by an illustrious freedom fighter, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who brought Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to light and influenced people by highlighting his image.

In Maharashtra, Shivaji Jayanti is a statewide holiday celebrated with great pomp and fervour. The day also commemorates the Marathas’ rich and diverse cultural heritage. People remember and pay tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the occasion of his Jayanti through cultural celebrations. People will be amazed and inspired by Shivaji Maharaj’s bravery and intellect for the rest of their lives.

Instead of Persian, which was the common language at the time, Marathi and Sanskrit were promoted as official languages in Shivaji’s court and administration. The anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj’s birth provides an opportunity to reflect on his pivotal role in the formation of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, Shivaji Maharaj was crowned Chhatrapati at the Raigad fort.

Shivaji Maharaj is said to have been named after the local goddess Shivai, who gave his mother a son in response to her prayers. Shivaji Maharaj established the Maratha kingdom and was known for his leadership, valour, and military tactics.

He was instrumental in uniting the Maratha chiefs of the Mayal, Konkan, and Desh regions. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a national hero because of his role and contributions to Indian history.
