From now onwards it will be compulsory to have 6 airbags in the passenger car. Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday announced that this rule will come into force from October 2023. For improved occupant safety, the road transport ministry had previously planned to mandate six airbags in eight-seater vehicles starting on October 1, 2022.

Meanwhile, For improved occupant safety, the road transport ministry had previously planned to mandate six airbags in eight-seater vehicles starting on October 1, 2022. Prior to October 1, 2022, the government had issued a draught notification requiring 6 airbags for all category M1 (vehicles with up to 8 seats) vehicles manufactured after that date.

Nitin Gadkari added “Safety of all passengers traveling in motor vehicles irrespective of their cost and variants is the foremost priority,” said Gadkari. “Considering the global supply chain constraints being faced by the auto industry and its impact on the macroeconomic scenario, it has been decided to implement the proposal mandating a minimum of 6 Airbags in Passenger Cars (M-1 Category) w.e.f 01st October 2023.”

After Cyrus Mistry, the former chairman of the Indian conglomerate Tata Sons, died in a car accident on Sunday, the discussion about road safety erupted once more in the fourth-largest auto market in the world. The draught rules were released to the public in January and were scheduled to be finalised a month later, but some automakers are opposing them because they claim it will raise vehicle prices.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports that more than 1.55 lakh people died in road accidents in India last year, which is the highest death toll ever recorded for a calendar year. This equates to an average of 426 deaths per day or 18 per hour.
