The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia has unveiled The Mukaab, a 400-metre-high, wide and long indoor super-city in the heart of Riyadh. The PIF-backed giga-project, which is large enough to house 20 Empire State Buildings, is hoped to become a new global icon of technology, sustainability, mobility, and Saudi innovation.

The Mukaab is located in the heart of the larger New Murabba Development, which was founded by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister and Chairman of the New Murabba Development Company (NMDC), to see the project through to completion.

The Riyadh giga-project is set to open in 2030.

The “Mukaab” will be the focal point of New Murabba, the city’s new downtown core, which will include 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, 980,000 square metres of retail space, 1.4 million square metres of office space, an 80-venue entertainment and cultural programme, another 1.8 million square metres of community facility space, and a technology and design-focused university.
The project will be located at the intersection of King Salman and King Khalid roads in Riyadh’s northwestern outskirts, covering an area of 19 square kilometres and housing hundreds of thousands of people. The project will include more than 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and more than 980,000 square metres of retail space, as well as 1.4 million square metres of office space, 620,000 square metres of leisure assets, and 1.8 million square metres of space dedicated to community facilities.
Inside, 2 million square metres of floor space for various mixed-use programmes will be stacked in a biomimetic tower centred under an enclosed dome with its own internal transportation network that may even include Halo-style troop transport ships and some type of large winged dragon creature, according to the promotional video.
