Indonesia soccer tragedy: At least 174 people were killed and 180 were injured at an Indonesian football stadium after fans invaded the pitch, causing a stampede that forced cops to use tear gas in East Java province. Following the conclusion of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya, supporters of the losing team invaded the pitch and police fired tear gas, causing a stampede and cases of suffocation, according to East Java police chief Nico Afinta.

The Indonesia soccer tragedy occurred on Saturday night in Malangm, Indonesia, and was one of the world’s deadliest sporting stadium disasters.
The police were forced to use tear gas shells to persuade the fans to return to the stands where two cops were killed.

According to police, many of the victims were trampled or choked to death. According to the police chief, many people were crushed and suffocated as they ran to one exit in the Indonesia soccer tragedy.

The Indonesian top league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a week following the 3-2 victory by Persebaya, and an investigation has been launched, according to the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).
The number of spectators exceeded the capacity of the Kanjuruhan stadium, according to Indonesia’s chief security minister, Mahfud MD. In an Instagram post on Sunday, he stated that 42,000 tickets had been issued for a stadium with a capacity of 38,000 people in the Indonesia soccer tragedy.

The Football Association of Indonesia announced that the Indonesian top league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a week and that an investigation has been launched. The FIFA Under-20 World Cup will be held in Indonesia in May and June of next year. “Hopefully, Indonesia soccer tragedy will be a valuable lesson for all of us,” league president Akhmad Hadian Lukita said.
