5 Common Diseases That Affect Women More Than Men On International Women’s Day 2023:

While both men and women can contract a variety of diseases, some health issues affect women more frequently and in unique ways. Women’s hormonal levels fluctuate during their menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum period, and menopause, which contributes to a variety of health issues. Even so, these health issues frequently go undiagnosed for long periods of time, either due to a lack of awareness or a lack of importance placed on them.

1. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) & Infertility

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a medical condition that affects one out of every ten women of childbearing age. PCOS causes small cysts to form around the ovaries in women. The ovaries are responsible for producing the egg that is released each month as part of a normal menstrual cycle. With PCOS, the egg may not develop properly or may not be released properly during ovulation. This causes a hormonal imbalance, which can have an impact on the woman’s overall health and appearance.

2. Anxiety and Depression

Women appear to be more prone than men to anxiety, depression, and somatic complaints – physical symptoms that cannot be explained medically. Depression is the most common mental health concern among women, particularly those in their late twenties and early thirties.

3. Gestational Diabetes:

Gestational diabetes is characterised by persistently high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Although gestational diabetes resolves after the baby is born, diabetes during pregnancy increases the mother’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

4. Breast Cancer

Breast cancer, which generally starts in the lining of the milk ducts and can spread to other organs, is the most aggressive cancer affecting women worldwide. Because of their longer life spans, female populations in developed countries are more prone to the condition.

Breast lumps may appear in women with breast cancer at first. Most breast lumps are not dangerous, but women should have each one examined by a medical professional.

5. Urinary Incontinence(UI):

Urinary incontinence, or loss of bladder control, is a common and often embarrassing issue. The severity ranges from occasionally leaking urine when coughing or sneezing to having a sudden and strong urge to urinate that prevents you from reaching a toilet in time.

Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from urinary incontinence. This is because women’s reproductive health events, such as pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, affect the bladder, urethra, and other muscles that support these organs, increasing the likelihood of urinary incontinence.
