International Women’s Day 2023: International Women’s Day (IWD), observance on March 8 honouring women’s achievements and promoting women’s rights. Since 1975, the United Nations (UN) has sponsored it as a national holiday in many countries.

International Women’s Day (IWD) arose from early twentieth-century efforts to promote women’s rights, particularly suffrage.

In its campaign for female suffrage, the Socialist Party of America established the first National Woman’s Day in 1909, which was marked by mass meetings across the country; the day was observed until 1913. Encouraged by German activist Clara Zetkin, the International Socialist Congress agreed in 1910 to create an international version of the American holiday, and the first International Workers of the World (IWD) was held on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
