Oscars 2023: Kantara, directed by Rishab Shetty, has surprised everyone by being nominated for an Academy Award in 2023. The film has been nominated in two categories.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released a list of 301 feature films eligible for Oscar consideration, with Indian films such as Kantara ,RRR, Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kashmir Files, making the cut. Pan Nalin’s Chhello Show (Last Film Show), India’s official Oscar entry, and Marathi films Me Vasantrao and Tujhya Sathi Kahi are also on the list. Hello, R Madhavan’s Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Iravin Nizhal, and Vikrant Rona, a Kannada film. Shaunak Sen’s documentary All That Breathes and Kartiki Gonsalves’ The Elephant Whisperers are also on the list.

In the reminder list, it was a decent representation of Indian cinema. The list included nine films: RRR, Kantara, Iravin Nizhal, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Rocketry, Me Vasantrao, The Kashmir Files, Chhello Show, The Next Morning, and Vikrant Rona.

Kantara’s makers and fans have another reason to celebrate, and it’s a big one after receiving accolades and massive box office success. The Rishab Shetty film has been nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Picture and Best Actor (Shetty). As a result, the film is now eligible for Oscar members to vote on whether it should be included in the main nominations.

Other contenders include blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The list also includes critically acclaimed films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Banshees of Insherin, and Tar, as well as an interesting selection of international films such as Argentina, 1985, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Broker.
Aside from Kantara, SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ made the list for qualifying in the Best Original Song category for the song ‘Naattu Naattu’. Kantara, written and directed by Rishab Shetty, was originally released on September 30 in Kannada only. However, given the overwhelming positive response to the film, the producers decided to dub it in additional languages.
