Police Officer, Journalist arrested for involvement in Hawala transactions in Guwahati

A journalist from a private media house in Guwahati and a police officer have been arrested after a substantial amount of money linked to suspected hawala transactions was seized.

According to the reports, on Thursday, a journalist from a private media house in Guwahati and a police officer have been arrested after a substantial amount of money linked to suspected hawala transactions was seized.

The journalist is recognized as Toufique Uddin Ahmed, while the police officer is identified as Mubarak Ali, holding the position of Sub-Inspector at Bharalu Police Station.

An additional person has been detained in connection with the case. Preliminary information indicates that, during raids conducted in November 2023, the police confiscated Rs 25 lakhs from each individual. 

Toufique Uddin Ahmed was allegedly apprehended by the Crime Branch in the Garigaon area of Guwahati earlier today.

In the beginning of this month, Guwahati Police arrested two individuals and seized more than Rs 1,69,70,000 from them during search operations in the Athgaon area.

According to reports, the seized funds were believed to be linked to purported hawala transactions in which the two individuals were allegedly engaged. Official sources state that, acting on specific information about suspicious individuals residing in a rented residence owned by Md Jamir Uddin, the Athgaon police team conducted a raid. 

Subsequently, the police apprehended two individuals, Devkaran Sen (27) and Manoj Kumar (47), both hailing from Rajasthan.
