NRC: On September 23rd in an order, the Supreme Court stayed the deportation of an Assam woman who had been excluded from the final draught of the state’s National Register of Citizens. In 2019, the Gauhati High Court upheld a 2017 verdict by a Foreigners Tribunal that the woman was not a citizen of India. On the other hand, The woman claims to be an Indian citizen by birth.

Both courts ruled that she entered Assam illegally from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971, the deadline for proving citizenship in the northeastern state.
On Friday, a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli was hearing a petition filed by the woman challenging the High Court order.
Meanwhile, The woman’s lawyer, Pijush Kanti Roy, told the judges that all of her family members had been granted Indian citizenship. The Foreigners Tribunal, on the other hand, ruled that she had entered the country illegally and ordered the authorities to take action.

The woman claims in her petition that she is an Indian citizen by birth. The woman also stated that she had submitted documents for the state’s National Register of Citizens list proving that her parents’ names appeared on voter lists and certificates issued by the local panchayat prior to 1971.
In August 2019, the final state’s National Register of Citizens in Assam was published, with the goal of distinguishing Indian citizens from undocumented immigrants living in the state.
In Assam, over 19 lakh people were left off the final state’s National Register of Citizens list.
The final list, which was released on August 31, 2019, left out 19,06,657 people, creating uncertainty about their citizenship. Out of 3,30,27,661 applicants, 3,11,21,004 names were included.
Around 3.30 crore people applied for inclusion in the state’s National Register of Citizens, but nearly 40 lakh of their names were omitted from the draught NRC published on July 30, 2018.
