Due to heavy rain, the guard wall of the Subansiri Hydel Power Project collapses. The powerhouse could be submerged underwater at any time. The guard walls were constructed to protect the dam from overflowing water. On Saturday, a diversion tunnel of the under-construction Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border collapsed due to the dam’s accumulation of excess water due to heavy rain, breaching the tunnel’s water carrying capacity.

Constant rains in Arunachal Pradesh’s upstream areas have increased the flow of water in the Subansiri river, causing significant damage to the NHPC’s under-construction Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP).

Heavy rains have caused landslides, with flood water flowing above the main dam’s construction, wreaking havoc in downstream areas.

The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) is still being built on the Assam-Arunachal border in Gerukamukh, Dhemaji.

The Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) at Gerukamukh on the Subansiri River is being built by the state-owned National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). The hydel dam is being built as part of India’s 50,000 MW hydropower programme, which was launched in 2003, with a total of 5,600 MW planned on the Subansiri river, which has three components.

In 2021, The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (LHP) was being built by NHPC at Gerukamukh on the Assam-Arunachal border in the Dhemaji district had been struck by nature. Due to heavy rains in the state of Arunachal Pradesh the water level of the River Subansiri began to overflow in the SHIP’s catchment area.

Subansiri is one of the largest tributaries of the Brahmaputra, a transboundary river that flows from Tibet in China into Bangladesh. After constructing a dam at Gerukamukh on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the SLHP is diverting the Subansiri’s waters through five tunnels.
