On Thursday, officials announced that the Northeast Frontier Railway’s (NFR) plan to repurpose some of its retired train coaches, deemed unfit for use, to establish a minimum of 62 coach restaurants within its jurisdiction.
Sabyasachi De, NFR’s CPRO (Chief Public Relations Officer), mentioned that there are presently 13 operational coach restaurants across the entire N F Railway.
Among them, eight are in Katihar, two in Alipurduar, and one each in Rangia, Lumding, and Tinsukia. Both railway passengers and the general public are relishing this distinctive dining experience.
He added, “Currently, work is in progress at seven locations in Katihar, 13 in Alipurduar, and 14 each in Rangia, Lumding, and Tinsukia divisions, as 62 locations across NF Railways have been chosen for the introduction of these coach restaurants”.
An official statement mentioned that these coach restaurants are being established at significant stations and locations. According to De, their popularity stems from their aesthetic design with a heritage look.
These restaurants are intended to serve both passengers and the general public while also contributing to generating non-fare revenue for the railways.
