According to representatives of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the tragedy occurred when the boat struck a submerged pillar being built for India’s longest bridge, the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge.
After checking an area damaged by erosion, Dhubri Circle Officer Sanju Das was returning with a revenue official and an ASDMA field officer. The other travelers were citizens, including women and young people from schools.
On the other hand, in Dhubri Boat accident, some of the passengers managed to swim to safety, while locals and members of the State Disaster Response Force had to save others. Officials reported that a few injured people were sent to a nearby hospital.
According to Anbamuthan M.P., the deputy commissioner of Dhubri, an engineer from the company building the bridge has been detained for his involvement in the incident. Locals claimed that because the company forbids them from using a service bridge, they are compelled to utilize boats on a narrow section of the Brahmaputra.
“While 28 people are safe, Dhubri circle officer Sanju Das has not yet been located. The search for him started on Friday. Eight people who are in shock as a result of the incident have been hospitalized, according to Anbamuthan.
In 2020, a boat accident occurred in Dhubri’s Bilasipara leading to the missing of one passenger. Two passengers, both father, and son fell into the deep waters of Brahmaputra. However, the father Habez Ali narrowly escaped and recovered. Meanwhile, his son Razaq Ali went missing.
