The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, popularly known as Guwahati Zoo, is spread across 432 acres(175 hectare) stands as the largest of its kind in the Northeast region. The Zoo is located within the Hengerabari Reserved Forest in Guwahati.
This Zoo is home to about 895 animals, birds and reptiles representing almost 113 species of animals and birds from around the world.
Currently, the Zoo houses three Giraffes. Previously, a male giraffe named ‘Vijay’ joined the zoo in 2019, followed by the introduction of a female Giraffe named ‘Vijaya’ in 2022.
Despite the calf having African roots, it is proudly Assamese by birth, and netizens quickly contributed diverse ideas for names. Netizens came up with various name proposals for the calf like ‘Apurva’, ‘Maloti’ , ‘Himanta’, etc.
