In a heartbreaking incident on Sunday, Kushal Kalita, a dedicated policeman, lost his life in the hazardous depths of the Brahmaputra River in the South Salmara Mankachar district of Assam, India.
He was on a mission to educate the local people against child marriage and illegal drugs. The regrettable incident happened close to the Bangladeshi border in the Kacharipara Char area, emphasising the dangers that law enforcement personnel frequently encounter when carrying out their duties in difficult environments.
According to the reports, Kalita was taken by the DSP Probationer and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Headquarters. Tragedy struck them as they were sailing to the Bondihana region. Kalita slipped from the boat into the merciless river currents, who was also working as the Deputy Inspector General of the district’s Personal Security Officer (PSO).
Despite immediate rescue attempts by the locals, including the throwing of a life jacket, Kalita’s life could not be saved. The swift response of the locals underlines the sense of community and the readiness to help in times of crisis. Unfortunately, this time, their efforts were in vain. The local people alleges that the SP, DSP and OC did not rescue Kushal Kalita.
Senior officials, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Border Security Force (BSF) were all notified of the situation by Superintendent of Police Horen Tokbi. Although Kalita’s body has been found, his service rifle is still missing. A post-mortem will be carried out, and the family has been informed. Officer Kalita’s tragic demise serves as a reminder of the dangers and sacrifices police personnel must endure in the course of their work.
