Assam Cabinet: Srimanta Sankardev Chair to be established at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi to encourage study and research outside Assam on Srimanta Sankardev and the State’s Bhakti Movement.
Ranoj Pegu, the state’s education minister, announced the development on Monday, saying that the discussion with the university to establish a chair in honour of the state’s great vainshnavite saint had been completed.
“The state’s higher education department has already completed the process with the JNU administration,” he said, adding that “after today’s cabinet nod, the Assam government and JNU will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to finalise the matter.”
Pegu went on to say that the establishment of the chair would not only provide ample opportunity for students to conduct research on Sankardev and Indology, but it would also bring Assam’s age-old culture, history, and religious movement to the global stage.
Indology, also known as South Asian studies, is the academic study of the Indian subcontinent’s history, cultures, languages, and literature. It is a subset of Asian studies.
According to Pegu, the state government has already sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the purpose, as well as a one-time sanction of Rs 10 lakh to kickstart the process.
Meanwhile, the state government has decided to regularise the jobs of contractual teachers in schools that achieve Grade A in the Gunotsav for two consecutive years, according to the education minister.
