A 34-year-old woman from Assam was raped in a car near Hero Honda chowk in Gurugram by a ‘friend,’ police said on Thursday.

According to the woman, a private firm employee, she had been communicating over the phone with the accused, Sandeep (40), for the past few days.

After she left her Sector 37 office on Monday, Sandeep volunteered to pick her up at Hero Honda chowk, according to police.

“I sat in his car and after some time conversing, he raped me in the car and threatened to kill me,” the woman stated in her complaint, according to police.

 

After her allegation, Sandeep, a resident of Jhajjar, was charged at Sector 37 police station on Wednesday under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and arrested on Thursday.

“The accused admitted his guilt. He appeared in a municipal court today and was placed in judicial custody “SHO of Sector 37 police station, Inspector Sunita, said.

25% rise in rape cases in Delhi between 2020, 2021

According to NCRB data, women aged 18 to 30 are the most susceptible in Delhi, with over 900 women in this age range being involved in over 1,250 rape incidents reported last year. Rape incidents increased by 25% in 2021, compared to 1,000 instances in 2020.

Ten years after the gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in December 2012, Delhi has become India’s most “unsafe” metropolitan city, with over 39 cases of “crimes against women” recorded in the city every day in 2021, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
