34 civil servant officers have been apprehended in relation to the 2014 Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scandal.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) reportedly detained the officials from various places on Tuesday night, based on the information available.
According to sources, the arrested officers are currently undergoing intense interrogation in Guwahati. All 34 civil servants’ names were implicated in the investigation report of the Justice (retd.) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission.
Two APS officers, Shahjahan Sarkar and Aishwarya Jeevan Baruah, were among the 34 officers apprehended by the SIT in relation to the matter.
Earlier, this month, the Assam government initiated departmental proceedings against the 34 Assam Civil Service(ACS), and other elite service officers selected by the APSC for the batch of 2013. The Chief Minister’s Office(CMO) stated that the government’s swift action was prompted by the inquiry report and a directive from Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Initially, when the APSC scam surfaced between 2017 and 2019, both job seekers and the public at large lost confidence in the government. However, the recent actions taken by the government against those implicated in the APSC scam have brought hope to almost everyone.
The Assam Director General of Police GP Singh conveyed the message about the Tuesday night arrests through a tweet that said, “As you sow, so shall you reap”.
