15 opposing parties to nominate one candidate for each constituency in Assam

Bhupen Borah, the chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, disclosed this information to the media after the meeting that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam, an opposition alliance comprising 15 parties across all constituencies will field a common candidate against the BJP-led coalition.

The Opposition Alliance in Assam held a crucial meeting in Dhubri district where Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah held a meeting with Assam TMC President Ripun Borah and Raijor Dal party leader Akhil Gogoi, among others.

A decision has been taken to avoid fragmentation within the party, and for this purpose, an announcement has been made today in a meeting of representatives from the United Opposition Alliance held in Dhubri district. Bhupen Borah, the chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, disclosed this information to the media after the meeting that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam, an opposition alliance comprising 15 parties across all constituencies will field a common candidate against the BJP-led coalition.

According to the information published in the media, the President of the Pradesh Congress, Bhupen Borah, has urged all opposing parties in the state to come together and cease violence in order to ensure a peaceful election. He has called for a meeting today in Assam to initiate discussions with the United Opposition Front, led by ULFA and the government, aiming to reach an agreement through negotiations and put an end to the current situation of killings and violence.

Borah mentioned, “In the 2024 elections, one individual will be contesting against the BJP-led alliance. A decision has been made to launch a candidate against the BJP across the country with a unified front of 26 parties. I, in opposition to a candidate from the BJP-led alliance, will be contesting as a candidate on behalf of the anti-BJP united platform in Assam”. 

Discussing the meeting, Ripun Borah, the Assam TMC chief, mentioned that they are asserting their claim on four Lok Sabha seats and remain optimistic about fielding their candidates in those constituencies. “During the initial discussions today, opinions were gathered from both sides. We have expressed our interest in Karimganj, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, and Lakhimpur constituencies.While the final decision is pending, we have formally requested these seats. The resolution will be determined during talks with our leader Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming INDIA bloc meetings. We have informed her about our potential in securing these four seats, and she will advocate for us,” explained Ripun Borah.

Additionally, Akhil Gogoi, the leader of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar, participated in the discussions today. Gogoi mentioned that a consensus was reached during the meeting, outlining an agreement that each party will nominate one candidate for each seat, avoiding any conflicts. He explicitly stated that Raijor Dal will not be participating in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
