IIT Guwahati: According to defense sources, IIT Guwahati has developed a 3D-printed sentry post for the Indian Army that can be set up at its intended site within 24 hours by the Army’s engineer wing.

According to Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, a defense spokesman, the prototype demonstrates the capability of rapid construction using 3D printed technology, which can be used in border areas where traditional construction is difficult due to inclement weather, terrain, and altitude limitations.

The 3D-printed sentry post is completely modular and can be transported to and assembled at the construction site.

According to Rawat, 3D printing technology can be an alternative to traditional construction methods, which have many limitations such as longer construction time, material availability on site, and so on.

The sentry post was developed as part of the Indigenous Research and Development Programme, which was established by a memorandum of understanding signed in July this year between the Eastern Army Command and IIT Guwahati to develop cost-effective and sustainable defense infrastructure for the Army.

Rawat stated that the 3D printed structure, the first of its kind in the region, was formally handed over to the Indian Army by IIT authorities on Thursday at a function held on the IIT campus, highlighting the Army’s initiative in embracing new technologies for defense infrastructure development in collaboration with the country’s premier academic institutions.
